Organized and hosted by the lovely Molly Crabapple, Dr. Sketchy's is a cabaret themed life drawing session for the anti-art school kids. Who doesnt love burlesque, booze and boobs! Well Molly has been hosting these artists themed Dr. Sketchy's sessions lately with folks such as David Stoupakis and Ron English, and she asked me to do one as well. Of course I jumped at the chance to see one of my characters come to life like that. All I had to do was show up and behold the wonder!

Dragon Con!!

Finally geting to the fun pics that I took at Dragon Con from September. I got flown in as the Guest of Honor (I even got a plaque for that believe it or not, and got to have dinner next to Leonard Nemoy and William Shatner!)

First of all this event is just crazy. So many people dressed up, so much fun had, so much booze everywhere. IT WAS AWESOME.

I was invited as a unofficial guest to come hang out at the third annual Baby Tattooville event held in Riverside California at the amazing Mission Inn. A historical landmark building from 1903.

It felt like I time traveled back to early Cali.

Travis Louie found a massive chip.

Chillin' with Mike Hussar. He was one of my favorite instructors in college, and one who really taught me how to paint. Love this guy.

And then the event was over with bang! This was my second Baby Tattooville, and it was awesome as ever. Especially getting more time to hang out with people and just chat and draw was really fun. Such a cool environment.

Then I went to my Dad's house the next day and found this old pastel drawing my Great Aunt did of my brother and I when we were babies. Awww.

And here's my baby brother's new tattoo! Smart kid eh?! ;)

Australia and Semi-Permanent

Directly after Baby Tattooville I was back on the plane to head over to a massive event in Melbourne and Perth, Australia called Semi-Permenent. They had speakers like Jeff Soto, Vince Frost, Grafik Magazine, Industrial Light & Magic, Keith Schofield, and Timba Smits.

Talk about some major jetlag! That was crazy. Since I was flying in from LA, the first flight was only 15 hours. But on the way back, going all the way from Perth back to NYC... well that definitely set a new record for me... 30 hours. Yep. Wow.

So after settling in I went to check out Outre Gallery where Jeff Soto and I were going to have a signing together. After doing so many of them it's really kinda nice to sit with someone else.

They had a show up with Angelique Houtkamp while we were there. Much respect to the watercolors. I went to her opening to meet her and say hello, her and her friends were total sweethearts.

Also up was Chris Conn, who really just blows me away. Fantastic work.

Then it was off to the Melbourne Exhibition Center to speak!! I was on the first day so it was nice to be able to get it over with right away.

Here is a shot of the auditorium. I couldnt even fit it all in one picture! There were 1500 attendee's to this event... that set another new record for me.

Oddly enough, 150 people or 1500 doesnt matter. It went really smooth, and was really fun to speak to all those people. I've gotten over the nervousness now and can enjoy the moment. Who would have thought!?!

Then they held a big afterparty for the speakers and guests, where we all got to mingle and talk. Here are some sweetie's that wanted some Mr. Wiggle lovin.

Then this girl who used to work at Outre Gallery, gave me this badass badass ring. Damn son!!! Panther action.

Then I had some time to go to the Aquarium (of course!) They had some really nice Jellyfish. They were exceptionally otherworldly here... I feel like this one is floating across Europa.

Then I got taken out for some nighttime adventures in Melbourne.

All the cool bars are down dirty little alleys.

I had some work to do in my hotel room. Here is my setup.

Then I was off to Perth for round 2 of Semi-Permenent. I got taken to the cemetary to see some Roos! Was pretty cool to see them just hopping around there.

The main thing I was excited about in Perth was going to Bon Scotts grave. Here is a statue of him near the cemetary.

Then we found it! Australians say it's the proper way to end an adventure in their country. Travel west til Perth then have a beer with Bon. So I did! With my new favorite beer Coopers. Mmmmmmm.

This is Matty. Matty, was the driver for the event and was freakin awesome. All the speakers had left already so he just drove me around all day long, looking at cool things.

I have been into black swans lately, and I finally saw them in person! That was really exciting.

Then it was time to leave Oz... off to the airport again.

I had a long enough layover in Sydney to actually leave the airport for a couple hours, so I headed downtown to the botanical gardens. Here is a weird sculpture on the way.

This is a real Wishing Tree. In earlier times people believed that certain trees contained spirits and that you could make a wish by touching the trees or by walking around them three times forward then three times backward.

This thing was right next to the gardens.

It was cool seeing wild Cockatoos all over Australia. Only thing I missed seeing in it's natural habitat were the Koalas...

Brazil Tour - Rio de Janeiro

Oh baby please, back in Rio Rio Rio!!! I have such love for this beautiful city, it's mountainous geography, and the people. It was the last city of the tour, and with how busy the prior week was in São Paulo, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, and Curitiba I was happy to know I was going to be in one place for 2 whole weeks.

Rio started off awesome with meeting Simone, who had a hand exactly like my Futureheads poster! It was like I made it for her unbeknownst! And it's so sublte you dont even really notice her missing finger.

We all went to have some food and cocktails at Bar Meza in Botafogo, and the bartender made a drink I'd like to try to recreate here in NYC... with flaming Absinthe and a very tricky recipe that involves vaporizing it. I think I'll mess it up a few times, but I'll have to try it out.

Here we are with another concoction. Matias Maxx (Brazilian tour manager), Marcella Sobral (Writer for Globo magazine), the awesome bartender, Marco (Canastra), Julia, and me! Saúde!

Marcella, the two blondies (as my new Rio nickname was bestowed upon me by the other blondie), and Simone.

Oh the beach, the beach! This time in Rio I stayed in Leblon, which is just on the other side of Ipanema. Sweet area.

Then it was time for the signing at Cucaracha in Ipanema!

Despite the on and off rain showers, there was an awesome turnout!

Believe it or not, Brazil has some AMAZING pizza. Quite similar in the ingredients, but the differences in the dough, veggies and cheese they use... make it soooooo goood.

My crazy friends... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Here is Cristo looking ominous. 'Christ The Redeemer' is 39 meters tall! (130 feet!!) You can see him from almost all over central Rio.

Now for some good food dishes from Meza... this had to be my fav, not really Brazilian, but awesome nonetheless. Lightly coated shrimp, with BLOODY MARY DIPPING SAUCE. Oh man... feel free to try this at home kids. Its an awesome combo.

Now this one looks like a dessert right? Wrong! It's Caldo de Feijao, a traditional Brazilian black bean soup. Delish.

Back at Meza (We went there like 5 times, ok? So what.) With my Rio peeps, with... wait... what? More fancy shots? Yep!

One afternoon I was invited to the atelier of the famous abstract Brazilian artist Carlos Vergara. He is in Santa Teresa, which is the main artist neighborhood in Rio. It's waaaay up high on the mountain right near Cristo. Here is one of his paintings. He said the process of this was from when his windows blew out from a big storm, so he went in and sprinkled charcoal all over the glass shards, then took a huge peice of canvas coated in glue, and made a monoprint of it.

With abstract works, for me personally, the beauty is in the explanation. Here are some larger peices.

Another unbelievable treat! Candied figs from the south of Brazil with Requeijão (theee most yummiest creamiest softest cheese in the world) I hope I can find it NYC. I will try.

Here we are at my first live sporting game ever! I got taken to the Fluminence vs Flamengo home game. Both were Rio teams, so it was intense! And so much fun! I want to go to more Soccer games.

The last weekend in Brazil I got asked to DJ an Indie rock night at Casa de Matriz. This was really super fun!!

We stayed up all night and went straight to the beach. You know how we do it! And stayed there all day. Perfect!

The vendors that walk up and down the beach sell all kinds of stuff, but this is the basic Brazilian beach snack. Kind of weird tasting, but you get used to it. Like a salty puffy rice cracker but better.

Then to end the Brazilian adventure, another beautiful picture of Cristo. Just hangin out, no big deal. Oh Brazil... how I'lll miss you!!!!

Brazil Tour - Belo Horizonte and Curitiba

We were off and flying to Belo Horizonte...

...in style!! You cant beat sipping on an ice cold beer while getting your boarding pass. Yeah Brazilians are SERIOUS about their beer tempurature. If it isnt served in a bucket of ice, its from a thermostat refrigerator so you can pick your beer from the coldest cooler. Burns your tongue it's so cold. Word.

Here is the view from Quina Galeria where we were setting up. I love the aged peeling paint behind the gothic building.

Here was a peice from an artist that makes little tiny characters in little tiny bottles! Precarious!

Then we made it over to a club to see the Rio based swing band Canastra. Lots of fun!

Here is filmmaker Henry Saltz from LAb013 who made the Porto Alegre video. He and Eduardo drove all the way down from Porto Alegre to hang out with us again. Super fun when people come from other cities to meet up with you. They made that night really awesome! Especially after we saw the worst cover band in the world at a bar right before this. "Take me down to the paradise city....!!!!"

Brazil Tour - Porto Alegre

Then I landed in Porto Alegre! Ready for more! And so began the week of crazy travel. I only had 2 days in each city during this week, but soaked up as much as I could!

Here is the view from my hotel room... very sweet, very pretty. Kind of reminded me of LA.

I saw these horse drawn carriage guys pretty often throughout the city. Really transformed it into an old timey feeling.

Right after checking in I did a photo shoot for a Brazilian music magazine called Noize. These dudes were awesome!

Here is the shot and spread going into the new issue. They asked me for my most influential album... Of course I said The Melvins!

Then it was off to the Welcome BBQ they threw for me! So cool that they did that, it was a really great way to just hang out with the people and friends of the event organizers.

Here is the Churrasco man!! (That's BBQ for you fine folks). Yum yum yum! He's dressed up in the traditional Gaúcho outfit, which is their equivalent of our cowboys.

Here he is with his Matte tea gourd, and knife. It is legal in Brazil to carry a large knife, only if you are dressed in traditional gaúcho attire. Even into a bank or a store. Crazy cool!

Then it was off to the Cabaret Do Beco to set up the show for the event!

What a fun night and fun people! The event lasted until like 4am, and was the first one I had where we took over a whole nightclub. There was an awesome DJ downstairs, and a line around the corner to get in. I felt so special! Yay Porto Alegre!!!

Brazil Tour - São Paulo

Continuing on my tour, I was off to Brazil for my 5 city adventure! After a loooong long 14 hour flight from LAX, I landed in São Paulo and was picked up by Eduardo from Choque Cultural. After this tour is done I will have spent 2 months in Brazil in 2009. Pretty damn cool! You know, a lot of people asked me in my interviews, why did I want to come back to Brazil again? And the answer really, for any city that we love to visit... Its the people! Such big hearts and open minds. I have met so many beautiful and gracious souls here (and all over the world) and I'm so grateful for such amazing people in my life!

Here are the awesome guys setting up in the gallery at Choque Cultural. Painting the walls and having fun.

I painted a huge mural on the wall downstairs over a period of 4 days. Was really cool to do and a my second one ever. Here is the preliminary drawing.

And here is a time lapse video I made on my camera of the whole thing! Yay! It's the first time I finally used this on my camera... so cool. I wanna make some more of these of me painting.

Then during the week I took a break from painting the mural to do a 4 color serigraph with some cool printers in São Paulo that Choque knows. This is my final inking.

Then the week of super hard work and lots of parties ended and I took the train up to Los Angeles. Such a nice view traveling right along the ocean.

I ran into my comic writer friend Josh Dysart at the train station and we all got to travel up to LA together. Good conversations!

Then while up in LA I went to go sign a bunch of new gicleés at my printers in Santa Monica and checked out some matte varnish samples of their prints. They all look great but I think I'll stick with gloss.

Then I got to signing and numbering the new Bunny Rider print! These look sweet!

We found this cool store that's like a museum with loads of cool stuff inside. Neato. I want my house to be like that.

Then we went to the Travis Louie signing! His new book is awesome and comes with really neat stories to go along with his paintings. Go buy it!!

San Deigo... Oh what an adventure! Every year it gets crazier and crazier! I flew in from Lisbon and had some awesome jetlag, but there was so much happening it kept me going strong!

My friend Kristin came down from Portland to nerd out, here she is with my awesome assistant Sara Antoinette Martin.

Steven and I stopped by to visit Jeff Soto at the Mark Murphy booth. So rad to see friends doing so good. Jeff and I went to Art Center together.

Then we went to see GWAR at the Vice party!! I hadn't seen them in forever and its good to know they still rock! It's all still a bloody mess!!!
