"Tara McPherson"

August 2006 Your style: HIghly rendered and flat at the same time, sweet and creepy, elegant and grotesque. The push and pull of opposing forces interests me and I think it creates a stronger image.
Your favorite project: Painting the comic covers for the DC Comics' Vertigo is just all-round super fun. I work with amazing artists and writers, and I get such creative freedom and a huge sense of personal fulfillment from those paintings.
Your favorite thing to draw: Lately, it's been characters with heartless bodies. Reading Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" has got me thinking about human anomalies and physical transformations: missing body elements, parts growing out of other parts, physical oddities- you know, the usual.
If you were a color: I'm feeling kind of pink today.
About the image: ("Sometimes I Just Want a Hug")
I was walking home, feeling a bit sad and thought, "Sometimes I just really want a hug." To feel that powerful embrace that makes you feel whole and safe and comforted. I walked right home and did a little sketch. This girl is me, if I were a blue alien.
