Nose Job
Eric Firestone is pleased to announce a summer group show “Nose Job,” curated by Carlo McCormick, to open July 15the and runs through August 21th in East Hampton. With a sly wink to Warhol’s iconic early Sixties image “Before and After” in which he appropriated and altered a plastic surgery ad for a nose job to comment on our culture’s ideals of beauty, Nose Job is in fact a tribute to the old vernacular folk-art form of nose art dating from both World Wars in which soldiers painted images and slogans on the noses of military planes.
Firestone and McCormick began the project by scouring the ‘bone yards’ of the Arizona desert where the old disused airplanes of America’s air force go to die and collected a wide range of nose cones from these planes in various shapes and sizes. The pair invited an array of contemporary artists to transform these curious relics into objects of art. What started as a mere whim found deep resonance in the creative community as many artists have their own associations and inspirations from the legacy of nose art.
Aiko, Dan Colen, Peter Dayton, Viejas Del Mercado, Jane Dickson, Shepard Fairey, Futura, How & Nosm, Juan James, Ryan McGuinness, Tara McPherson, Nunca, Raymond Pettibon, Richard Prince, Lee Quinones, Carlos (MARE 139) Rodriguez, Retna, Saner, Kenny Scharf, Shelter Serra, Swoon, JJ Veronis and Aaron Young.

"Eau de parfum opens the 2011 season of Dorothy Circus Gallery, bringing together for the first time in Italy nine-tenths of the most promising American artists of the Pop Surrealism, which can claim previous experience in the major exhibition galleries of American sector, with an invitation to confrontation on an issue where memory and emotions are inextricably linked.
The artists will try to materialize a intangible world, shapeless, that seems to be unreal, just because it cannot be perceived by the eyes, and that can be reach only through a sense, a universe that is fragile and intense, persistent and intangible, that Proust-talking-holds immense building of Memory on their almost impalpable drops."

‘Never Judge...?’ A Group Exhibition In Association with Penguin Books 3rd - 19th December
Never judge a book by the cover. The age old proverb is easier said than done, when choosing a read who can't be swayed by good cover art, the cover after all has the job of explaining thousands of words in an instant. Think of the classic covers that grace the jackets of thousands of books and the names of the truly great artists that have put their artwork to novels, creating iconic classic covers for these classic books, but is the book cover dying? With the advent of the iPad it's now questionable how long the printed novel and its cover will be around, just like the album cover, it'll be resigned to a thumbnail in iTunes.
StolenSpace in association with Penguin plan to celebrate the art of the book cover with a show titled ' Never Judge?’ this December.
Featured Artists: Aaron Rose, Anders Nilsen, Anthony Lister, Blek Le Rat, Buff Monster, D*FACE, Dave Kinsey, Estevan Oriol, Gary Taxali, Jeff Soto, Jim Houser, Jon Burgerman, Kid Acne, Mark Dean Veca, Maya Hayuk, Methane Studios, Miss Van, Parra, Pete Fowler, Ripo, Sam Flores, SAN, SEEN, Shepard Fairey, Skull Phone,Sylvia Ji, Tara McPherson, The London Police, WK Interact, and many mor

August 27 - September 12, 2010 Opening Reception: Friday, August 27, 2010, 7-10PM At the new Rotofugi Gallery location: 2780 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago About The Exhibit: Playboy Enterprises in collaboration with The Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh) invited over 20 contemporary and street artists to reinterpret the iconic Playboy Bunny in celebration of the opening of the first Playboy Club in Chicago 50 years ago in 1960. In conjunction with Baby Tattooville 2008, Beyond Baby Tattooville presents artwork by over a dozen artists loosely tied together in the ambiguously-named "pop surrealism" or "lowbrow" art movement. This originally underground art movement formed in Southern California in the 70s and 80s and has roots and influences from punk music, comics such as R. Crumb, hot rod art, and various other underground subcultures, in addition to surrealism and figurative art. After being largely ignored by many traditional fine art institutions, including museums, this movement has recently been getting its due. Some of the most notable artists of this scene are a part of the show, including Glenn Barr, Dave Cooper, Bob Dob, Joe Ledbetter, Shag, Amy Sol, Michael Whelan, Tara McPherson, Lola and many more. In addition to the exhibition, the Baby Tattooville 2008 event will be held at the Mission Inn Oct 3 - 5. More information can be found online at www.babytattooville.com. A reception will be held on October 4, with many of the artists in attendance. This exhibit is a partnership between RAM and Bob Self of Baby Tattoo along with Billy Shire Fine Arts in Los Angeles.
Tara McPherson will not be attending this event in person.
I will be a guest speaker in this years ICON 5 in NYC.

Martha Rich with
Tara McPherson, Jordin Isip and Jonathan Levine
The increasing popularity and success of the small gallery has created a need for new, affordable and original art. Exhibiting in a gallery is a great way for illustrators to expand beyond traditional forms of illustration and generate additional income. How do you take that next step into the exhibiting world and get your work out of the studio and on the gallery wall? Illustrator Martha Rich questions gallery curator Jonathan Levine and illustrators Jordin Isip and Tara McPherson about the challenges and successes connected to their gallery experiences. Curious about showing your work in galleries, curating your own shows or developing a new line of revenue and expanding your creativity? This session is for you.
I will have a table at this years Museum of Contemporary Comic Art event.

Illustration In The Age Of Anxiety Parsons The New School
Opens November 10, 2007
Parsons The New School for Design Illustration Department presents a new mini symposium focused on how the current cultural climate is affecting the field of illustration. The event, “Illustration in the Age of Anxiety,” will take place on November 10 at The New School, 55 West 13 Street, at 3pm, and is free and open to the public.
‘Illustration in the Age of Anxiety’ looks at how illustration handles times of unease and anxiety in our culture, from the atomic anxiety of the 1950s to today's wars and upheaval. “Illustration in the Age of Anxiety” will feature three conversations lead by prominent and accomplished writers illustrators.
"Shaky Line, Shaky Times: Ed Koren and Ed Sorel in Conversation with Dan Nadel" will feature master satirical illustrators Ed Koren and Ed Sorel who will discuss their famously anxious drawing styles and nearly half century' worth of drawings for hundreds of books and publications.
"Ben Katchor: Reading in Public" will feature MacArthur-award winning graphic novelist Ben Katchor, who joins Parsons as a full time faculty member this fall, as he discusses the difficulties of reading in an uncertain time.
Pop-gothic artists Camille Rose Garcia and Tara McPherson will talk to Guarnaccia about drawing on the dark side of life in the final session of the symposium, "A Light in the Dark: Camille Rose Garcia and Tara McPherson in conversation with Steven Guarnaccia."
Nora Krug, another new fulltime faculty member in the illustration department, will deliver the introductory remarks and introduce the panels.
The event will be held in the Theresa Lang Community and Student Center at The New School, 55 West 13th Street, 2nd floor, from 3-7 pm and is free and open to the public.

Baby Tattooville provides a unique opportunity for a small group of celebrated artists and serious collectors to spend time together in a relaxed yet creatively stimulating environment. Without the time constraints of a typical personal appearance, or the crowd control issues of a high profile art event, artists and collectors will have a weekend-long opportunity to discuss and explore their mutual interests. Think of Baby Tattooville as an innovative and exclusive community built around the lifestyle of the artist and the artistry of the collector.
